National Women’s Health Week

Just like Mother’s Day should be everyday, I thin every week should be Women’s Health Week.

But, I guess we should be happy with one week. National Women’s Health Week:

“Is a weeklong health observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health (OWH). National Women’s Health Week empowers women to make their health a top priority. With the theme “It’s Your Time,” the nationwide initiative encourages women to take simple steps for a longer, healthier, and happier life. Important steps include:

– Getting at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous physical activity, or a combination of both each week
– Eating a nutritious diet
– Visiting a health care professional to receive regular checkups and preventive screenings
– Avoiding risky behaviors, such as smoking and not wearing a seatbelt
– Paying attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress”

Take a look at the list, I thought I would grade myself on their recommendations.
Physical Activity: A. Training for a 100 mile bike ride means you get plenty of hours of physical activity. In addition to riding, I have been getting to the gym 2 days a week for interval cardio and strength training.
Diet: B+. I eat a healthy diet 90% of the time. I indulged this weekend on BBQ food and sweets, so I knocked myself a little on my grade.
Check Ups: C. I am not very good at this. Currently I am uninsured (bad, I know), so I can’t get all my check ups as I should. And we moved last fall and finding new doctors is always a hassle. I make sure to see the lady doctor every year, though! I used to be religious about getting to the dentist every 6 months, but am in desperate need of a cleaning.
Risky Behaviors: A+. I always wear my seat belt no matter how far we are driving. I think smoking is disgusting and none of my friends smoke either (no second hand smoke for my lungs).
Mental Health: A-. We head to bed around 10 every night and I get close to 8 hours every night. Now that the dog is sleeping in, I am able to get really good sleep on the weekends. I have been feeling stressed lately which I try to deal with through exercise, deep breaths and taking things one day at a time. That’s all we can do, right?

How would you grade yourself? Are you doing anything special for the week to focus on your health? I am participating in Yoga Pose May on Wednesday in the hopes of inspiring me to add more yoga into my routine. I need it bad!

Happy Women’s Health Week!
